What is the NEC?

🟣 What is UNISON’s National Executive Council ?

UNISON’s National Executive Council (NEC) is the union’s elected leadership body. Members elected to the NEC are responsible for guiding the organisation and ensuring it reflects the priorities of its 1.3 million members. Made up of representatives from regions, service groups, and self‑organised groups, the NEC is the democratic heart of the union.

🟣 What does the NEC do?

  • Sets UNISON’s overall direction, shaping the union’s priorities, campaigns, and policies.

  • Delivers on the decisions made at National Delegates Conference ensuring decisions are transparent and enacted in accordance with the democratic process.

  • Oversees governance and finances, making sure UNISON is run responsibly and effectively.

  • Champions members’ voices, ensuring the experience and views of workers across all sectors influence national decisions.

🟣 Why it matters

The NEC ensures UNISON remains a strong, democratic, member‑led union — one that protects workers’ rights, fights for fairness, and stands up for public services.

The NEC is made up of a senior group of elected members, elected by members to represent different sections of UNISON.

They work closely with UNISON’s staff leadership team, and their values, goals and vision set the tone for everyone who is part of the union.

Their decisions have a direct impact on you and your job, which is why it’s so important the NEC is made up of members who best represent you and what you want from your union.
